WE SOARED TO THE MOON.

NOW IT'S TIME TO REACH FOR THE STARS!!

"We all shine on . . . like the moon and the stars and the sun . . .
we all shine on and on and on."   --- John Lennon

We all remember where we were on that magnificent day. And we were proud. Proud of the men on the Moon. Proud of our nation's accomplishment. Proud to be an American!!

There, at Cape Canaveral, was Wickwood's newsletter Guru, Fred, with all of his family. He was part of the team that got us to the Moon. Really. Today, I'm continually in awe of his smarts, his wit and his patience!! He reads my mind to make this newsletter better every time. Thank you Fred!

While he was a young man doing important things, I'm embarrassed to say, I was in Geneva headed home after 3 weeks in a bikini in the south of France (oh, those were the days) with my best friend from Kazoo. It was the summer of Chappaquiddick and that's all the news we heard. And, so it was a surprise, when on the morning we were leaving we happened to notice that we had a TV in our room (a first . . . we were 25 and poor as church mice). As we flipped it on, we saw, in fuzzy black and white, Neil Armstrong placing one foot on the Moon and saying his infamous words:

"One small step for a Man, one giant leap for Mankind."

Moments later, back on Earth, we two Midwesterners stepped into the hotel's breakfast room and were greeted by a standing ovation. We'd done nothing. We were just proud Americans! That day the whole world stood together in awe and respect of America. That memory still brings me chills and tears.

Earthrise from Apollo 11

"Say it's only a paper moon,
Sailing over a cardboard sea.
But It wouldn't be make believe,
If you believed in me."
                ---- Ella Fitzgerald

"I don’t know what you could say about a day in which you have seen
four beautiful sunsets."     --- John Glenn, Astronaut

"The thing I'll remember most about the flight is that it was fun. In fact, I'm sure it was the most fun that I'll ever have in my life.
--- Sally K. Ride, First Woman to Orbit Earth on the Space Shuttle
