JULEE'S MEMORIES . . .
(a.k.a Wickwood's Chief Cook & Bottle Washer)

Bitter cold day. February 1981. The Silver Palate "Girls", as they called us much to our chagrin, were having lunch with a Vogue editor. She asked if we were working on a cookbook. "Yes!", snuck out of my lips while Sheil kicked my shin under the table. A bottle of Scotch later we had an outline for our unorthodox cookbook. A chapter entirely on Asparagus. And then more asparagus recipes in the Vegetable chapter. Strange, they said. Made perfect sense, we thought. No photos. instead, line drawings. Everyone said it wouldn't sell. Our friends and families said our shop would be out-of-business once we gave away all our recipes.

Memorial Day weekend found me at a manual Royal typewriter plunked on our lawn (actually, Ute Hagen's lawn for it was her house we were renting) while it drizzled. I had no idea how to fill the blank page before me, but with my pals and summer roommates, Andy and Molly, jeering me about my attempting to write a cookbook, I wasn’t going inside until the page was filled or until the lightning struck me, whichever came first. And, honestly, to my surprise, that blank page made me crazy, I started writing and the ideas didn't stop. Nights and weekends (I had a business to run during the day) I wrote until by Labor Day weekend I had a 1556-page stack of recipes; Sheil's line art, my favorite quotes, menus, entertaining tips, and lore. Bottom line, we still had no idea how to write a cookbook.

Please, Tap Into YOUR Memories . . .

The best thing I repeatedly hear about the SPCB is, "It's like having a friend in the kitchen with you!" And, over the years, I've met thousands of new cooking pals all around the world, signed loads of cookbooks held together with rubber bands, and been feted more times than I'll ever deserve.

So now I'm celebrating in my own way by asking YOU about your favorite SP recipe and how you've made it your own. Have you tweaked it over the years? Perhaps you've served it in a fresh new way? At some point you didn't have an ingredient and you substituted one of yours for one of ours. After all, isn't that the fun of cooking . . . putting your own personality into a recipe?

I'm inviting you to please share your story on Wickwood Inn's Facebook page facebook.com/Thewickwoodinn or by writing to me at Julee Rosso silverpalatecb@wickwoodinn.com. Make it short and sweet. Show me your sass. You needn't list ingredient quantities, just creatively describe your creativity. And we'll all share in the fun.

Celebrate at Wickwood very soon to continue the fun,
and make your own new memories!

"Looks may be deceiving. It's eating that's believing."

June 14 - Trip to Coral Gables in Saugatuck for a discussion about the history and stories of this local icon.

This new exhibition at the History Museum chronicles how the two small lakeshore villages of Saugatuck and Douglas reflected the contrasting worlds of fear and fun during the Cold War era of the 1950s-1970s.

Saugatuck-Douglas History Museum is located on Park Street at Mt. Baldhead Park, Saugatuck on the west side of the Kalamazoo River, a short walk from the Chain Ferry.

The Museum is open 1 PM to 4 PM daily through Labor Day then from 1 PM to 4 PM on weekends through October.
