SPECIAL EARLY SPRING EDITION ---- SPECIAL EARLY SPRING EDITION ---- SPECIAL EARLY SPRING EDITION

Spring is Springing at Wickwood!!!!

Rebirth is everywhere. The sky is blue, the beach free of ice, and ducks are paddling, pussy willows budding and crocus and tulips pushing up all around. It’s all very spontaneous and we love it!!! Come Visit us at Wickwood!!!

The Coffee Cake Renaissance ---

But, believe it or not --- the reason for this Special Edition is all about the serendipity of a rebirth of a different sort. It’s all about a much beloved cake!!!

Yes, at Wickwood we can truly go wild about a cake, especially when it’s Julee’s Original Sour Cream Coffee Cake from Forty Years Ago.!!!! It had disappeared over the years, but now it’s back. We just had to send out this Special Edition to share it with you!!!!! It’s too good to keep secret any longer.

The Story---

In the early days of The Silver Palate gourmet take-out store (circa 1977) --- I used to make my Sour Cream Coffee Cake at home in the wee small hours of the morning --- and taxi it to our brand new shop. This was pre-dawn before I went to my “real job” or to Med School --- depending on the day. My Sour Cream Coffee Cake was one of those recipes friends had repeatedly requested for over a decade --- simply a winner!!! Major moist, with pecans, cinnamon and a subtle tart creaminess --- one slice was never enough.

Well, over the years something happened to that original recipe until one day at the Inn --- the cake just wasn’t working any longer. And so Judy (my recipe testing colleague) and I went to the files and the kitchen --- and there we discovered the original. We just couldn’t believe the difference. None of us could stop eating this long lost version of The Sour Cream Coffee Cake. Our guests immediately noticed the difference --- and believe me, you will too!!! Life is way too short not to let everyone eat (this) cake!!

JULEE'S ORIGINAL SOUR CREAM COFFEE CAKE

This classic is a Renaissance worth celebrating.

16 tablespoons (2 sticks) sweet butter
2½ cups granulated sugar
2 eggs, beaten
2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
2 cups sour cream
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1½ cups shelled pecans, coarsely chopped
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1. Preheat oven to 350° F. Butter and flour a 10 inch bundt pan.
2. Cream together butter and 2 cups of the sugar (set aside the remaining ½ cup). Add eggs, blending well, then the sour cream and vanilla.
3. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt.
4. Fold the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture, and beat until just blended. Do not over beat.
5. In a separate bowl, mix remaining ½ cup of sugar with pecans and cinnamon.
6. Pour half of the batter into the bundt pan. Sprinkle with half the pecans and sugar mixture. Add remaining batter and top with the rest of the pecan mixture.
7. Set on the middle rack of the oven and bake for about 45 - 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Don’t over bake. Serves 10 if you're lucky.
8. Serve warm at Wickwood --- We wait 20-30 minutes out of the oven.
