The Perfect Gifts Are Here!

This Christmas when “less is more” seems more appropriate than ever, it’s critical to select gifts more thoughtfully than ever. Thank goodness for our unique entrepreneurial shop keepers in Saugatuck and Douglas. They’ve done so much of the work for us as they’ve carefully edited the marketplace

Shops are now stocked with baubles and beads, the practical and the impractical. Gifts that are important and those simply improbable. You’ll find art, antiques, clothing, fragrances and spa products, books and music, home and garden furnishings and candy cakes and goodies galore. It can be simply overwhelming.

Our streets are the most charming place to wander as you shop --- in and out sipping refreshments as you meander, and carefully selecting what your special pal’s heart desires.

Wickwood's Sour Cream Coffee Cake

A Story from Iraq

One mid-October morning, Wickwood's e-mails brought a note from the mother of a Marine stationed in Iraq. “Each week I make baked goods and send them off to my son. One recent one included your Sour Cream Coffee Cake. My son tells me that they are still talking about the coffee cake --- some of the troops said that they had never eaten anything that good. ‘Comfort food' for my two sons are those foods that bring back memories of their childhood, which include many recipes from your first Silver Palate cookbook."

I wrote back through tears streaming down my face, how touched I was, and that perhaps they’d also like our Carrot Cake Cupcakes and our Crispy Chocolate Chip Cookies from Wickwood, and sent her the recipes. I heard back several days later that there’s to be a “Family Cookie Bake Off” with her son’s company in Iraq as judges. Our Crispy Chocolate Chip Cookies will be there for judging baked by Mom. This Christmas, the Sassy Women of Wickwood (as we refer to one another) will be baking for the troops too  --- It’s high time!

Michael Holmes

“Everything Old is New Again”

Our favorite local Star --- and the wittiest guy around, singer Michael Holmes, has released his newest CD - “Let Yourself Go” which includes one of our Peter Allen favorites. You’re listening to it. This CD plus his original “If You Were Wonderin’” are available at Wickwood and Thomas Greene in Douglas.

Chocolate

Artisan Chocolate Lovers Alert

If you love the Scharffen Bergen “bean to bar” concept (not easily accomplished) with new American chocolate makers sourcing their cacao beans directly with farmers and then controlling every aspect of the roasting, grinding and making of chocolate, you’ll love this new group of artisans.

The prize is deep chocolate flavor, high in cacao percentage with nuances of tropical fruit. It is an epiphany in to chocoholics! As is, of course Mort Rosenbaum’s book, “Chocolate”. If chocolate is your quest, these are the cutting edge companies to discover: www.amanochocolate.com www.askinosie.com www.escazuchocolates.com www.tazachocolate.com www.devrieschocolate.com

Bird in a Christmas Tree

It's for the birds!

This Holiday Season, as you trim your tree indoors, trim one outside too. This time for the birds. Just string it with popcorn, berries and seeds and you’ll have a delightful ballet to watch. It’s far different that ordinary bird feeders and it will enrich your every day.

Peanut Butter

Dreamy Peanut Butter

This is the stuff of legend. Virginia peanuts blended, roasted and round til smooth with just a little salt added. No sugar in sight. Taste a natural, intense, velvety mouthwatering sensation. We love to snack on it spread atop apple slices. Koezes of Grand Rapids, Michigan  www.koeze.com

Bronze Turkey

Better than Butterball!

When Abraham Lincoln declared the first national Thanksgiving Day in 1863, he never knew that the taste of turkey served to celebrate it, one hundred and forty years later, would have gradually diminish so much ! Now, if you don’t want to settle for that, and instead enjoy the true taste of turkey, there are many choices --- Heritage Turkey, Organic Turkey, Antibiotic-free Turkey, Free Range, and Wild Turkey. Most are sold fresh and are improved with brining before roasting. Shop at: Your Local Farmer’s Market
